4th Grade Hands on Science

At Northeast we strongly believe it is important to give kids access to hands on experiences that can model the amazing things that happen all around us In Ms. Ayres 4th Grade science class, students participated in a lab to start a unit on volcanoes. The class investigated how lava thickness is related to a volcano’s shape and eruption pattern. To get their hands on some lava without getting burned, students tested two different materials, made of karo syrup and water/flour, to observe how they trapped gases differently and created different shapes. Please enjoy the photos of their lava simulation investigation. If you have a 4th grader, make sure to ask them, “Why do some volcanoes explode?” Don’t miss your chance to learn all about it!
