Northeast School Celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on March 21!
On March 21st or 3.21 Northeast Elementary School participated in World Down Syndrome Day. This global awareness day has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. On Thursday students came in wearing their brightest most colorful mismatched socks! The idea was to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome." Additionally, the school was treated to a presentation in the morning conducted by two Northeast students; 5th grader Gianluca Di Benedetto, 3rd grader Max Di Benedetto and their sister Gabi who attends Glenfield Middle School in the 8th grade.

Northeast School Joins Forces With Northeast Earth Coalition
Today master gardeners, Jose German and David Wasmuth of Northeast Earth Coalition visited our school. Thanks to Global Studies and Art teachers, Mr. Mishoe and Ms. Cloud, we are joining forces with Northeast Earth Coalition to help our students make connections between the Art of Gardening and Global Citizenship through environmental stewardship. With the guidance and support of Mr. Jose and Mr. David, Northeast School's Garden will become a part of a network of gardens in New Jersey producing food for those who are experiencing food insecurity. In addition, Northeast School will become registered with the New Jersey Pollinator Pathways program as we prepare students to plant pollinator gardens to help re-establish pollinator-friendly habitats and food sources for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinating insects and wildlife. Parents are invited to get involved in this initiative and join the fun. In the coming weeks select classes will be heading outside to prepare the soil and plant seeds. Please contact Ms. Cloud for more information |
